A Holiday Market fundraiser was held at Mary Wright Public School. The staff and students were very excited about the event that took place back in October, when the Discovery Classes came up with a great idea to hold a holiday market for the school to raise money to buy gifts for the Salvation Army Christmas campaign. The two classes began making crafts each week in anticipation of the big event. The students worked many hours creating a wide variety of gifts to be sold, from pillows, to candle holders, to ornaments to hang from the tree. In November, the rest of the school was told about the market and all the classes were asked to contribute crafts as well. Having the entire school work towards a common goal created a true sense of community within the school.
The Discovery Classes collected all of the items from the rest of the students, and set up the Holiday Market. With the help of several grade 7 and 8 students, the Discovery students opened the doors for the entire school, one class at a time, to visit and purchase items from the market. The money raised through this venture far surpassed any expectations – an incredible $1959.50 was raised.
The Discovery staff then worked with Giant Tiger to purchase toys, pajamas, socks and slippers to donate to the Salvation Army. The students got to pick out some of the toys themselves, then the staff at Giant Tiger graciously gathered everything together to be donated, surpassing the total raised and donating the extra items for free. The pile of toys and clothes was quite a sight to see, and many families will now have a merry Christmas thanks to the efforts of Giant Tiger and the entire Mary Wright school community. Well done!
