Stanton Farms in Ilderton will be the first farm in Ontario to use a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility. It will become Ontario’s first agricultural-based renewable natural gas supplier, helping decarbonize Canada’s natural gas supply.
Stanton Farms will provide over 3 million cubic metres per year of RNG to the Ontario natural gas network, enough renewable energy for the heating needs of over 1300 homes. 60,000 tonnes per year of community-based organic waste will be diverted from landfill, reducing methane release into the atmosphere, a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Commencement of Stanton Farms’ new RNG facility will eliminate over 11,000 tonnes per year of GHG emissions from community-based organic waste to landfill, equivalent to taking over 2200 passenger vehicles off the road.
Stanton Farms’ new RNG facility builds on its commitment to sustainability and the environment. An early pioneer in agricultural-based renewable energy, Stanton Farms installed one of Canada’s first on-farm anaerobic digestion (AD) systems for biogas production, supplying the Town of Ilderton with renewable electricity for over a decade.
Enbridge Gas is leading the way to a low-carbon future by connecting RNG producers to the energy grid. The RNG produced at Stanton Farms will be blended into our natural gas distribution network and storage using an innovative RNG injection station, to ultimately heat homes, power businesses and fuel fleets, further reducing carbon emissions.
