CUPE has filed a five-day strike notice on behalf of its 55,000 Ontario education workers after talks for a new contract came to a crashing halt once again this week. CUPE’s Laura Walton says its not just about money but also about improving student services. She says parents have demanded more for their kids.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce has said that he is disappointed after the Canadian Union of Public Employees gave the notice.
The union says the two sides recently agreed on a 3.59% wage increase, but it’s still fighting for higher staffing levels for some positions, including secretaries and early childhood educators. It was just a couple weeks ago that thousands of workers, including education assistants, librarians and custodians, walked off the job shutting hundreds of schools to in-person learning for two days.
