Things got a little tense Saturday in downtown Parkhill as the front of the Middlesex County library saw protestors and counter protestors face-to-face during a drag queen story time event hosted at the library by the Strathroy Pride and Rainbow Optimists groups. As a pair of drag queens read stories to children inside, outside protestors numbering almost two dozen expressed their displeasure with signs and voices. Protesters blared megaphones and sirens at families who were trying to enter the building, with representation from Strathroy Pride escorting the families inside. OPP were on hand inside and blocking the door to the event. Some more protection for the event outside as a female biker group who call themselves the ‘Wind Sisters’ came together to form a chain in front of the entrance. Saturday’s event, less than 7 days following a decision by Norwich Township Council to ban all flags on municipal property, including the Pride flag. Moving forward organizers say they will continue to host Pride-related events despite protestors.
