Middlesex OPP was called on April 26th to an address in North Middlesex for a Sextortion complaint.
Someone reached out to a teen on a social media app and a conversation was started. An intimate photo was shared.
Sometime later, the teen received a message to send money or the photo would be sent to friends and family. Over the past few months, the youth made multiple payments in excess of $3000 before telling their parents and authorities.
The OPP would like to remind everyone, to think twice about taking and sharing intimate photos.
If you find yourself in this situation, know that you are not alone. It is estimated that only 5-10% of frauds are reported, often due to the embarrassment associated with being tricked and defrauded.
If someone demands payment and/or threatens to share your photos or videos, NEVER pay the money. Screenshot their messages and usernames, block them from social media, and contact the police immediately.
