Effective starting today, August 1st, Canada is set to enforce new Health Canada regulations that demand cigarettes to have individual anti-smoking warnings.
Canadian Cancer Society senior policy analyst Rob Cunningham says the warnings about potential harms including organ damage, impotence and leukemia will convince teens not to smoke.
The warning labels on each individual cigarette will also feature messages such as ‘Poison in every puff.’
Pioneering the initiative, Canada aims to inspire cigarette users to quit and discourage others to start using them. Other nations like Australia and Norway consider emulating Canada’s approach.
By July of 2024, king-size cigarettes will be the first to carry these warnings in stores, as announced by Health Canada.
