In response to ongoing concerns regarding drivers failing to stop for school buses with their red lights activated in Lakefield, the Peterborough Police Service took action on Tuesday, with an officer from the Traffic Services Unit assigned to monitor the after-school traffic in the area of Queen Street and Bridge Street.
While the officer observed zero school bus infractions, they did make a traffic stop involving a 33-year-old driver. During the stop, the officer detected the smell of alcohol and conducted a roadside alcohol test.
As a result, the driver was charged with multiple offenses, including failing to stop for a stop sign, not having a valid driver’s license, operating a vehicle without a validated permit, failing to carry an insurance card, and having a blood alcohol level above zero as a novice driver. In addition to these charges, the driver received a three-day license suspension for having a blood alcohol level in the warn range.
The Peterborough Police Service encourages residents to report traffic complaints through their Online Reporting Portal to enhance safety on the roads and around school buses.
