Recently at Middlesex County Council, OPP Media Relations Officer Jeff Hare, introduced Project Safe Trade, which provides secure spaces at OPP detachments for online transactions, countering safety risks linked with platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji. It establishes designated parking spots to mitigate dangers arising from meeting strangers for online exchanges. Hare highlighted issues like unreported theft and fraud on social platforms.
The initiative, modeled after successful implementations in counties like Oxford, aims to start in Strathroy and London, expanding to satellite offices in Glencoe, Delaware, Dorchester, Parkhill, and Lucan for an estimated $500 to $1,000 cost. Councillors discussed surveillance, surface needs, and referred the initiative to the Budget Committee for further exploration, showing support for enhancing community safety during online transactions in Middlesex County.
