In March, the unemployment rate in the London region saw its third consecutive monthly increase. According to Statistics Canada’s recent release, the unemployment rate in the London Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) reached 6.4 per cent last month. This marks a rise from 5.9 per cent in February, and a 1.5 percentage point increase compared to the same period last year.
The last instance where the local unemployment rate surpassed 6 per cent was back in October 2022, when it peaked at 6.5 per cent. Furthermore, the labour force, representing individuals aged 15 and above who are either employed or actively seeking employment, experienced a slight increase last month. The London CMA encompasses not only London itself but also neighboring areas such as St. Thomas, Strathroy, and other adjacent communities.
