Warwick Township has reiterated its backing for Bill 165: Keeping Energy Costs Down, a measure put forth by the Ontario government to promote affordable and accessible energy in the province.
Bill 165 was introduced following the Ontario Energy Board’s decision to eliminate access to alternative funding models for smaller-scale natural gas expansion projects. This bill carries significant implications for rural Ontario’s development, particularly concerning natural gas accessibility.
As a municipality lacking in both natural gas and electricity infrastructure, Warwick Township faces firsthand the energy access challenges encountered by rural communities. For years, Warwick has sought expansion through the Natural Gas Expansion Program, reflecting local interests in accessing natural gas to support homes and businesses.
While appreciative of the government’s initiative, the township expressed disappointment at not being chosen to present at the provincial hearing on April 8th and 9th at Queen’s Park.
As the host of Twin Creeks Landfill, one of the province’s largest, Warwick actively contributes to Ontario’s sustainability objectives and supports the Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project at Twin Creeks Landfill, a partnership between Enbridge and Waste Management Canada aiming to power an additional 35,000 homes.
Mayor Todd Case stressed the critical nature of natural gas access in rural Ontario, citing its importance for Warwick’s economic development and sustainability. Enhancing natural gas services is deemed essential for Warwick to remain competitive with neighboring communities and foster economic growth.
