As you know Ontario is unveiling a groundbreaking initiative aimed at curbing distractions in classrooms and bolstering the well-being of children across the province when it comes to cell phones and vapes and more to begin this fall. myFM reached out to the Thames Valley School Board and received this official response.

Under the new guidelines, students from kindergarten to Grade 6 must keep their phones silenced and out of sight throughout the school day unless expressly authorized by a teacher. For students in Grades 7 to 12, cellphone use during class is strictly prohibited unless specifically instructed otherwise by the teacher. Additionally, access to social media platforms will be restricted on school networks and devices, and student distraction levels will be noted in report cards. The government will facilitate mandatory training for educators and offer additional resources for students and parents.
Furthermore, the government is fortifying regulations regarding the possession and use of vaping products by students. Immediate confiscation of such items will be mandated, with parental notification being a priority. A budget allocation of $30 million in the 2024 fiscal plan has been earmarked for the installation of vape detection systems and other security enhancements in schools.
To complement these measures, the government is investing $17.5 million in comprehensive support systems for student mental health and parental involvement, including:
$15 million to provide assistance to students vulnerable to addictive behaviors.
$1 million to collaborate with School Mental Health Ontario in developing webinars and informational materials tailored to educate parents and students province-wide about the harmful effects of vaping and excessive cellphone usage.
$1.5 million for Parent Involvement Committees and student-led initiatives to spearhead local awareness campaigns aimed at deterring vaping and cellphone distractions. These endeavors are set to commence in the upcoming 2024-25 school year.
