The Peterborough Museum and Archives is gearing up to celebrate “May is Museum Month,” inviting residents and visitors alike to explore the rich heritage and culture of the region through a variety of programs, events, and exhibitions.
This year’s theme, “Museums for Education and Research,” aims to underscore the crucial role of museums in fostering learning, innovation, and knowledge sharing.
Additionally, in conjunction with International Museum Day on May 18 and “May is Museum Month,” the Ontario Museum Association (OMA) is encouraging Ontarians to explore the 700 museums, galleries, and heritage sites across the province, celebrating the significant contributions of museums to Ontario’s cultural landscape and kicking off the 2024 summer tourism season.
As a designated ‘Category A Collecting Institution,’ the Peterborough Museum & Archives is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and making cultural property accessible to the public through exhibitions, research, and online platforms. The institution boasts an extensive collection, including over 45,000 objects in its artifact collections, more than 400,000 original photographic negatives, and over 3,300 linear feet of archival material.
Located at 300 Hunter St. East, within Ashburnham Memorial Park on Armour Hill, the Peterborough Museum and Archives offers a unique experience for those interested in delving into the city’s history and culture. However, visits to the archives require an appointment, so visitors are encouraged to call in advance to book their visit at 705-743-5180.
