As the warm weather approaches, motorcycle enthusiasts are gearing up to hit the open road. For many, this means bringing their beloved bikes out of storage after a long winter. However, before revving up and heading out, it’s crucial to ensure that your motorcycle is ready for the summer season.
One of the first steps in preparing your bike for summer is performing a thorough inspection. Start by checking the tires for any signs of wear or damage. Proper tire pressure is essential for safe riding, so make sure to inflate them to the recommended levels. Inspect the brakes, including the brake pads and fluid levels, to ensure they are in good working condition.
Constable Conrad Vitalis of the OPP Golden helmets says checking the tires before you head out for your first ride is an important and essential step.
Next, give your motorcycle a once-over to check for any loose bolts, leaks, or other issues. Pay special attention to the lights, signals, and horn to ensure they are functioning correctly. It’s also a good idea to inspect the chain or drive belt and lubricate it if necessary.
Constable Vitalis says doing a spot check of your bike seems obvious but a lot of riders are so eager to hit the road that they skip this vital step.
As part of your motorcycle’s summer maintenance, don’t forget to check the oil and filter. Change the oil if needed, and replace the filter to ensure optimal engine performance. It’s also a good idea to check the coolant levels and top up if necessary.
Finally, before hitting the road, take your motorcycle for a test ride to ensure everything is in proper working order. Pay attention to how the bike handles and performs, and address any issues that arise.
Taking the time to properly prepare your motorcycle for the summer season is crucial, says Constable Vitalis, adding that proper maintenance is key to keeping your bike running smoothly and ensuring your safety on the road.
