Omemee’s long-vacant historic train station is set for a new lease on life, thanks to the efforts of a local service club that has made it their mission to preserve and, eventually, move it.
Built in the early 1900s, the station was originally located on King Street but was later moved to the site of Lady Eaton Elementary School for use as a storage building. It has, however, sat empty since the school closed in August 2024.
Enter the Omemee and District Lions Club, which is now raising funds for the building’s restoration and searching for a more visible location.
Lion Karen Cooper, who is heading up the project, says when the club learned it could acquire the building, there was no hesitation to move ahead with its restoration to what it once was.
As for the station’s relocation, Cooper says somewhere on King Street is the first choice.
With cost of the station’s restoration estimated at $50,000 and some $20,000 needed for moving costs, Cooper says it’s an ambitious undertaking but one that the service club is fully committed to seeing through.
Donations are being sought for the station’s restoration and can be e-transferred to omemeelionsclubstation@gmail.com. For updates on the project, visit Restore The Omemee Train Station on Facebook.
