A coordinated police operation between the Windsor and Peterborough police services has led to the arrest of a 19-year-old suspect for first-degree murder and a 16-year-old youth for accessory to murder.
The arrests stem from a fatal shooting on Jan. 27 in Windsor, where police found 53-year-old Sean Shuart suffering from a gunshot wound in the 400 block of Wyandotte Street East. He was transported to hospital but later pronounced dead.
Investigators determined Shuart was shot following a verbal altercation with another man, who fled before officers arrived. The Windsor Police Major Crimes Unit identified a suspect known as “TY” and tracked him to Peterborough.
On Feb. 4, at approximately 5:10 p.m., Peterborough police’s Emergency Response Team carried out a high-risk arrest near George Street North and Simcoe Street. The two suspects were taken into custody without incident. A subsequent search led to the seizure of a replica pellet gun, a large sheathed machete, bear spray, drugs including fentanyl and pills, cash, digital scales, and multiple cellphones.
The primary suspect was later identified as Muhamad Taupan. He has been returned to Windsor and charged with first-degree murder. In Peterborough, he also faces multiple charges, including drug trafficking and weapons offences.
The 16-year-old, whose name is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with accessory to murder, as well as several weapons and drug-related offences.
Both accused remain in custody as the investigation continues.
