Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy has unseated Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre in the Carleton riding, ending Poilievre’s 20-year tenure as the area’s Member of Parliament.
Elections Canada results released Tuesday morning show Fanjoy winning by nearly 3,800 votes, securing 50.6 percent of the ballots cast. The race in Carleton was unusually complex, with over 90 candidates—mostly independents—on the ballot following a coordinated protest effort that disrupted the campaign.
Meanwhile, Elections Canada announced a temporary pause in the counting of special ballots, delaying final results in several ridings that remain too close to call. As a result, Canadians will have to wait until later in the day to learn whether the Liberals, led by Mark Carney, have secured a majority or must govern with a minority.
