More than 68 percent of eligible voters participated in the recent federal election, according to Elections Canada, with over 19.5 million ballots cast nationwide. That number still fell short of the historic high recorded in March 1958, when 79.4 percent of voters took part. The 68.7 percent however is the highest level of voter participation since the 1993 election, which saw a turnout of 69.6 percent.
Some early numbers from Elections Canada show approximately 11 million Canadians voted in person at polling stations or long-term care facilities on Monday. Another 7.3 million cast their votes in advance polls, while about 1.2 million used special ballots.
The Liberal Party secured 43.7 percent of the vote and won 169 seats. The Conservative Party with 41.3 percent and 144 seats. The Bloc Québécois and the New Democratic Party each received 6.3 percent of the vote, earning 22 and seven seats, respectively.
