Ken MacKay of Port Dover is on an incredible journey, walking solo from Windsor to Ottawa to raise money and awareness for homeless veterans across Canada. The 65-year-old is a military veteran himself and an experienced long-distance walker, and we caught up with him Thursday as he arrived in Melbourne.
Ken began his 800-kilometre trek on April 26th and plans to reach Ottawa by June 6th. He’s walking about 25 kilometres a day and staying with friends or supporters along the way.
The walk is part of his Trek4Vets initiative, with all donations going to Homes for Heroes, a national nonprofit that builds tiny home villages and offers support programs for unhoused veterans. Canada has an estimated 10,000 homeless veterans.
He says the idea for this journey came to him late one night, and he knew he had to take action for a cause close to his heart.
