Peterborough will deploy four automated speed enforcement cameras starting in 2025, following council approval of a two-year pilot project aimed at improving safety in designated School and Community Safety Zones.
ASE systems use a combination of camera technology and speed detection devices to capture images of vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit. Offences are reviewed by provincial officers and tickets are mailed to the vehicle owner.
The cameras will rotate among selected sites, allowing staff to assess compliance, logistics, and cost-recovery before considering a wider rollout.
Council’s decision follows a 2023 speed limit reduction near 30 schools. A post-study found speeds fell by 6.5 km/h, but average operating speeds remain 11.5 km/h above the posted 40 km/h limit.
The $489,000 initiative will be funded through the city’s 2025 capital budget. Final approval rests with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario.
Studies in Ottawa, Guelph and Toronto have shown ASE cameras to be effective in reducing driver speeds and enhancing community safety.
