A major broadband project is officially underway in Northumberland County, bringing long-awaited high-speed internet to more than 11,000 homes and businesses.
Construction has begun on the $64.2 million fibre optic network, led by Axle Telecom, with work now happening in Port Hope and Trent Hills.
The build will ultimately deliver reliable service across all seven local municipalities and Alderville First Nation.
Warden Brian Ostrander said the need for high-speed access in rural areas has never been greater.
Ostrander also thanked the federal and provincial governments for their financial support in making the project possible.
The initiative aims to close a significant service gap, with roughly one-third of county households currently underserved. Fibre lines are being laid now, with Axle Telecom not only handling construction but also providing internet plans once connections are live.
MPP David Piccini called it a game-changer for residents and businesses in the region.
Funding for the project comes from all levels of government, with Windsor Private Capital also partnering in the initiative.
Once complete, the network will offer consistent, high-speed service to thousands of people who have waited years to get online—marking a digital turning point for Northumberland’s rural future.
