OPP is reminding off-road vehicle riders to stay safe and make smart choices during ATV Safety Awareness Week, which runs from May 30 to June 8, 2025.
Last year, 34 people died in off-road vehicle crashes investigated by the OPP. Of those, 18 people were not wearing helmets. Another 15 deaths were linked to alcohol or drug use while driving.
To help prevent more tragedies, the OPP is working with the Ontario Federation of ATV Clubs to spread the message of safe riding. They are encouraging all riders to always wear an approved helmet, drive sober and drug-free, avoid speeding, and ride within their skill level, especially on rough or unfamiliar terrain.
Riders should also make sure their vehicles are well-maintained throughout the season. These basic safety steps can help ensure everyone gets home safely after a ride.
The OPP also wants to remind parents and guardians that young riders can benefit from proper training. Ontario offers an online ATV Training Course for Youth to help beginners learn the rules and develop safe habits early.
OPP says every ride should be a “Smart Ride, Safe Ride” and encourages all riders to lead by example, especially for younger or less experienced drivers.
