Brooke-Alvinston council is asking wind developer Venfor Inc. to hold a public meeting about a proposed wind turbine project. Venfor wants to build 17 turbines in Brooke-Alvinston and more in nearby Adelaide Metcalfe. If approved by the Independent Electricity System Operator, the project could generate $300,000 to $400,000 per year for the municipality through a host agreement.
However, most councillors and residents do not support the plan. Councillor Frank Nemcek called the meeting pointless, saying the project is unlikely to move forward. Councillor Jenny Redick supports holding the meeting so residents can ask questions and share concerns. Mayor Dave Ferguson said only one person has supported the project, while many others have expressed strong opposition.
Councillor Craig Sanders and Mayor Ferguson both feel the financial benefit does not outweigh the public frustration. Venfor has not confirmed if or when the public meeting will take place.
