Pedestrians in the Metcalfe Street West area will get some assistance as they negotiate the area of Metcalfe and Victoria Street. Recently at Council they approved a motion to request the County of Middlesex to install pedestrian crossing signs along Metcalfe Street near Victoria Street. Deputy Mayor Mike McGuire brought to motion forward stemming from a concerned pedestrian having difficulty accessing both streets while walking.
A question was raised as to why the Municipality would have to pay for this even though Metcalfe Street is a county road to which Director of Finance Bill Dakin tried to explain.
Members of council did express some concerns regarding only having signage and nothing electronic in terms of safety at this time, but McGuire emphasized that this is a quick assistance for this issue compared to beginning the process of spending roughly half a million dollars with no timeline on traffic lights. Council approved the motion to ask the County to move forward, and that Council would authorize the expenditure of up to $6000 for this.
