With hot and humid weather in the forecast, the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is advising residents to take extra care this weekend. Environment and Climate Change Canada is expected to issue a Heat Warning beginning Saturday, July 5 through Sunday, July 6, as daytime temperatures are projected to hit 31ºC with little relief overnight. These conditions significantly increase the risk of heat-related illness.
“We’re urging everyone to be prepared, take precautions, and check in on family, friends, and neighbours—especially those more vulnerable to extreme heat,” said the MLHU.
How to Beat the Heat
The MLHU recommends taking the following steps to stay safe and healthy:
Stay hydrated: Drink water and natural juices frequently, even if you’re not thirsty.
Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles or outside in direct sunlight.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol, including coffee, tea, and cola.
Limit outdoor activities: Stay indoors during peak heat hours. If you must go out, stick to early morning or evening and seek shade.
Dress for the weather: Wear light clothing and a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.
Cool your space: Keep blinds or curtains closed on sunny sides of your home. Turn off unnecessary lights and electronics.
Take breaks to cool down: Use cool showers, wet towels, or cool baths to lower body temperature.
Use fans wisely: Use fans to circulate air at night but do not rely on them alone during extended heatwaves.
Avoid strenuous activity, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
Limit use of gas-powered tools and oil-based products, which contribute to poor air quality.
Reduce vehicle use and avoid idling.
Heat Warning Criteria
A Heat Warning is issued when any of the following conditions are met in London or Middlesex County:
A forecast high of 31ºC or more and an overnight low of 20ºC or more, for two consecutive days, or
A Humidex reading of 40 or higher for two consecutive days, or
Forecasters predict that these conditions are likely to be met.
Stay informed, stay hydrated, and look out for one another. Let’s keep our community safe through the heat.
