A judge has found five former members of Canada’s world junior hockey team not guilty in a high-profile sexual assault case. The charges were linked to an alleged 2018 incident in a London, Ontario hotel room involving Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube, and Callan Foote.
Justice Maria Carroccia said the woman’s testimony had serious problems and wasn’t strong enough to convict. Videos from the night showed her appearing sober and saying it was consensual.
The judge said there was not enough proof any of the men acted without consent. All five have been cleared, though the case has sparked wider debate about consent and sexual assault in Canada.
Long-time women’s rights advocate Megan Walker, from London had this reaction to the verdict.
Walker tells myFM the results of this trial do not bode well for women who’ve been abused.
Walker says the men’s hockey culture in this country needs to change.
