As the August long weekend nears, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is reminding pet owners to plan ahead to keep their animals safe. With hot temperatures and busy activities on the horizon, Sara Vanderveer provided us some important tips to keep in mind.
As part of its No Hot Pets campaign, the SPCA says never leave pets in vehicles, even for a short stop. Cars can overheat in minutes.
Backyard barbecue hosts are told to keep animals away from the grill and foods like onions or grapes, which are toxic. For boating, pets should wear lifejackets and stay cool. And of course, having a spot so your pets can cool down is key.
Pet owners can visit nohotpets.ca to take a pledge, win prizes, and get more safety tips.
If you see an animal in distress, take action. Call the government’s Provincial Animal Welfare Services at 1-833-9ANIMAL or your local police. In an emergency, call 911.
