Plans to build wind turbines in Brooke-Alvinston have been shut down, though some critics argue council could have taken an even stronger stand. At a meeting Monday night, attended by nearly 100 residents, council voted unanimously against Venfor Inc.’s proposal to erect as many as 30 turbines across the Central Lambton community.
The company first floated the idea in 2024 and is preparing to submit a December bid to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) for a broader 300-megawatt project that would stretch across both Brooke-Alvinston and Adelaide-Metcalfe. Venfor representatives indicated about 20 turbines were planned for Brooke-Alvinston, mainly north and west of the village of Alvinston, with towers projected to reach roughly 120 metres tall.
Provincial rules require municipal support letters before projects can proceed. Brooke-Alvinston councillors had been cautious about the proposal from the outset, and their opposition grew as residents organized a grassroots campaign calling for the project to be stopped.
