Support staff at Ontario’s publicly funded colleges walked off the job after contract talks broke down just before the midnight deadline. The strike affects institutions across the province, including Fanshawe College and Lambton College.
Roughly 10,000 full-time support staff, represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), are demanding improvements to wages, benefits, and job security. The union notes that since last year, nearly 10,000 faculty and staff have already been laid off—or are expected to lose their jobs—as a result of hundreds of program cancellations and suspensions.
Despite the strike, classes are proceeding as scheduled and campuses remain open. However, students should anticipate possible delays at picket lines and plan for extra travel time. Certain student services may also be slowed or limited due to reduced staffing levels.
We will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
