The Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL) has officially named Brad Kovachik as its first-ever Referee-in-Chief, Commissioner Craig Spada announced today.
Kovachik brings an extensive and distinguished background in officiating to the role. A native of Woodstock, Ontario, he began his career as a linesman in the OHL before moving on to the NHL in 1996. Over the span of his nearly three-decade NHL career, he officiated more than 1,900 regular-season games and 200 playoff games, including five Stanley Cup Finals. He also represented the NHL on the international stage at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
“Brad’s arrival marks an important step in the GOHL’s continued growth,” said Commissioner Spada. “His deep knowledge and experience bring instant credibility to our league. We’re committed to enhancing the on-ice experience for both players and fans, and Brad will play a crucial role in that effort.”
In his new role, Kovachik will oversee the GOHL’s officiating department. He will serve as the primary point of contact for all teams regarding officiating matters, including rule interpretations, discipline, updates, and ongoing development.
His leadership is expected to elevate the standard of officiating across the league as the GOHL continues to strengthen its operations both on and off the ice.
