Earlier this week, reports out of Toronto indicated that Strathroy native Easton Cowan would not be part of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ season-opening roster. However, that situation appeared to change when the club announced this morning that Cowan had been called up to replace forward Jack Quillan ahead of their season opener.
Originally one of the final cuts from the roster, Cowan’s call-up marked a surprising second chance for the 2023 first-round pick. He traveled with the team to Scotiabank Arena and was present for pregame activities.
However, it has since been confirmed that Cowan will be a healthy scratch for tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. While he won’t dress for the opener, his presence with the team suggests the organization sees him as close to NHL-ready and values keeping him in the mix as the season begins.
