Officials are investigating the cause of a devastating barn fire that killed approximately 3,000 pigs in North Middlesex on Wednesday morning. While the cause has not yet been determined, fire officials say there is no indication the blaze is suspicious.
Crews from the North Middlesex Fire Department were called to a farm on Elm Tree Drive, between Sylvan and Roddick roads northeast of Arkona, at around 7:10 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found the large barn fully engulfed in flames, with the roof already collapsed, said North Middlesex Fire Chief Greg Vandenheuvel.
Fire departments from Lambton Shores and Adelaide Metcalfe provided mutual aid as crews worked for hours to contain the fire. Emergency personnel remained on scene into the afternoon to extinguish hotspots and assess the damage.
The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and will assist with the investigation. A damage estimate has not yet been released.
Elm Tree Drive, which was closed between Sylvan Road and Roddick Road during firefighting operations, has since reopened.
