The Middlesex-London Health Unit and Lambton County’s Medical Officer of Health, have issued a Cold Weather Alert for the region following an Environment Canada forecast predicting overnight temperatures to reach -15°C.
The alert is expected to remain in effect until Wednesday, January 28, 2026 in Lambton County and January 29th in Middlesex County. A termination notice will not be issued when the alert ends.
A Cold Weather Alert is issued when one or more of the following conditions are forecasted:
-
Overnight temperatures of -15°C or colder, without wind chill values
-
A wind chill warning issued by Environment Canada for Lambton County
-
Extreme weather events, such as blizzards or ice storms
All health organizations are advising community agencies that provide shelter and support to individuals experiencing homelessness to prepare for increased demand during the alert period.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions by dressing in warm layers, protecting exposed skin—particularly the head, neck, and face—from wind, and limiting time spent outdoors whenever possible.
Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can be dangerous and potentially life-threatening. Hypothermia, which can occur in any season, develops when the body’s core temperature drops below the normal range of 36.1°C to 37.8°C (97°F to 100°F). Symptoms may include pale skin, fatigue, confusion, intense shivering, and hallucinations.
