A close vote by Strathroy-Caradoc Council this week has raised questions about a proposed hospice on Walkers Drive and its future on prime agricultural land. Council voted 5-4 in favour of a motion from Ward 2 Councillor Greg Willsie that Council express its support for the principles and objectives of Bill 21, Protect Our Food Act, 2025, to ensure that Ontario’s prime agricultural land is preserved for future generations.
The motion also includes sending letters of support to provincial leaders and encouraging other municipalities to do the same. While councillors agreed farmland protection is important, many stressed the hospice discussion should continue. The narrow vote leaves uncertainty about how the decision may affect the proposed hospice project.
