Canada’s busiest trade corridor has shifted north, with traffic patterns changing along the border. Rising tolls at the Ambassador Bridge have pushed more commercial trucks toward the Bluewater Bridge in Sarnia, allowing it to surpass Windsor as the country’s top commercial crossing for the first time in decades.
Data shows the Sarnia crossing handled about 2.1 million truck trips in 2025, compared to roughly 1.9 million at the Ambassador Bridge. The shift has continued into 2026, with the Blue Water Bridge maintaining a lead in commercial traffic during the first three months of the year.
