Firefighters from Delaware and Strathroy-Caradoc responded to a stubborn house fire that reignited less than two days after it was first brought under control. The initial call came in Tuesday morning for a home on Wilson Street in Delaware. While the property is located less than a kilometre from the Delaware fire station, it falls under the jurisdiction of the Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department.
Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the residence. Firefighters from Mount Brydges assisted at the scene, and it was confirmed that no one was home at the time. Crews were able to contain the blaze, and the scene was cleared by mid-afternoon. Just after 1 a.m. Thursday, firefighters were called back when a neighbour noticed smoke coming from the same home. Strathroy Fire Chief Stephen Beasley tells myFM that a small fire was discovered in an open space behind a wall. It was quickly put out and the property was secured.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though it is believed to have originated in the garage.
The home sustained significant damage, and it is not yet known if it can be repaired. No residents were injured, though one Delaware firefighter suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.
