Residents in the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc are being reminded about the rules for fireworks use, as local officials stress the importance of safety and responsible celebrations.
The Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service, Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department, and municipal officials say fireworks are often linked to holidays and special events, but are sometimes used throughout the year without proper knowledge of the rules.
Under the bylaw, fireworks may only be set off between dusk and 11 p.m. on designated holidays such as Victoria Day and Canada Day, or when otherwise approved by municipal council.
Officials also note that anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed to ignite fireworks of any kind.
For larger or organized displays, a permit is required. The Fire Chief or Director of Fire Services can approve permits for fireworks on municipal property, as long as all bylaw conditions are met. These events also require written approval from council.
Permit holders must have a valid fireworks supervisor’s card and carry commercial general liability insurance of at least $2 million, covering injury, death, and property damage. The municipality must also be named as an additional insured party.
Applicants are required to notify nearby property owners before submitting a permit request, and a $25 application fee must be paid to the Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department at the time of application.
Officials say these rules are in place to help ensure fireworks are used safely and responsibly across the community.
