The Strathroy Library is helping tackle food insecurity in the community with the launch of a new food pantry designed to provide easy and anonymous access to emergency food. The pantry, which quietly opened in May, is part of a larger library initiative aimed at making emergency food supplies more accessible.
Vanessa Rappagna, Supervisor at the Library says the pantry is intended to serve as a low-barrier source of emergency food for anyone who needs it.
Rappagna emphasized that the pantry is not meant to replace local food banks, but rather to complement them.
The pantry is stocked through donations from the public and is located in the front foyer of the library off Frank Street. It is available during regular library hours.
The library is also accepting donations to help keep the pantry stocked. Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items in sealed packaging. Homemade foods, expired products, unsealed items, dented cans, medications, and herbal supplements cannot be accepted.
Donations can be dropped off at the library service desk.
Since opening, Rappagna said items have been moving regularly, suggesting there is a need for the service within the community. Looking ahead, she hopes the pantry could lead to partnerships with local food banks, businesses, and community organizations to further support the initiative.
Food insecurity continues to be a growing concern across Canada, and library staff hope the pantry will provide another way to support residents facing difficult circumstances.
