A local trivia night fundraiser is being organized to help a young dart player from the area travel to Las Vegas this summer to compete in the World Masters Darts Tournament.
Strathroy’s own, fourteen-year-old Shay Lyn Walsh has earned a spot at the prestigious tournament, which will take place from July 14th to 19th and will bring together some of the top young dart players from around the world.
Her father, Phillip Walsh, estimates the trip will cost between $3,000 and $3,500, covering flights, accommodations, and tournament registration fees.
To help cover travel expenses, a Trivia Night fundraiser will be held with support from the Strathroy Legion on June 26th. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with trivia running from 7 p.m. until approximately 9 p.m.
Shay Lyn says her journey in darts began just over a year ago when she attended her brother’s provincial tournament in St. Catharines.
After returning home, Shay Lyn began practicing with her father and soon joined a league. Since then, she has quickly climbed the rankings.
The World Masters tournament will see Shay Lyn compete against players from around the globe in the under-18 division.
Phillip says the fundraiser is open to participants aged 13 and older.
All funds raised will go directly toward Shay Lyn’s expenses for the tournament. She will be travelling with her coach and other competitors.
For those who may not think darts is for them, Shay Lyn has some simple advice.
Phillip is hoping the community will come out to support the young athlete as she prepares to represent the region on the international stage.
