In a recent safety message, West Region OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk warned that allowing an animal to sit on your lap while driving can create a dangerous distraction and increase the risk of a collision.
According to the Sanchuk, even a small movement from a pet can interfere with steering, braking, or visibility and the risks become even greater in a crash.
Sanchuk warns it’s not just lives at risk, but potential charges for drivers as well.
The OPP says keeping animals safely restrained helps protect not only pets, but everyone sharing the road.
