Last week we ran a story stating that the 2027 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo would no longer be held in Lambton County. On Wednesday the Ontario Plowmen’s Association (OPA) rebutted that statement saying it remains fully committed to hosting the 2027 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo in Lambton County, despite a recent announcement suggesting the event would be cancelled.
In a statement released this week, the OPA says the International Plowing Match has been a cornerstone of Ontario’s agricultural community for more than a century. Since its inception in 1913, the event has only been cancelled during the World Wars and the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The association says it has been working closely with local committees, farmers and community leaders since Lambton County’s successful bid was submitted in the spring of 2025. OPA officials say they remain committed to moving ahead with plans for the 2027 event.
The organization also highlighted the economic impact the International Plowing Match has had on host communities over the years. It notes the last event held in Lambton County in 1991 helped generate more than $150,000 in scholarships for local students, while the match continues to provide significant economic benefits to communities across Ontario.
The OPA says it was disappointed that last week’s announcement regarding the future of the 2027 event was issued before any direct discussions took place with its board. The association says it believes issues involving the partnership between the local organizing committee and the provincial organization are best addressed through open communication.
The Ontario Plowmen’s Association says it remains committed to working with its partners and continuing discussions to keep plans for the 2027 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo moving forward.
