It’s mid September and that means Saturday night hockey is returning to Strathroy. The Strathroy Rockets are ready for the new season, with head coach Matt Bowes expecting a strong team on the ice.
The Rockets have already had a chance to test themselves with the season opener on the road in St. Thomas against the stars last Friday, and Bowes says he likes what he has seen so far.
The team has had some changes both on the ice and behind the bench during the off season. One of the changes will be Defensive coach Steven Santos joining the Rockets after serving as head coach in Welland last season.
Bowes is entering his second season as head coach and says he learned a lot during his first year.
The Rockets will also have a strong local presence in their leadership group.
Dylan Searles and Jaxon Cragg will serve as assistant captains for the team.
Bowes says having local players is important because it gives the community a chance to support players who grew up playing minor hockey in Strathroy.
Bowes says he wants to see plenty of energy from the team and the fans this season.
The Rockets will open their regular season at home Saturday night against the Listowel Cyclones at the West Middlesex Memorial Centre. Puck Drop is 7:30pm.
