Two drivers are facing charges following a fatal collision involving a cyclist in Southwest Middlesex earlier this year. Middlesex OPP responded to Melbourne Road, between Ina Dale Drive and Olde Drive, shortly after noon on May 4 following a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a cyclist.
Police were assisted at the scene by Oneida Nation Police, Strathroy-Caradoc Police, Middlesex-London Paramedic Service and local fire crews.
The cyclist, a 25-year-old Southwest Middlesex resident, was taken to hospital but later died. The driver of the vehicle was also transported to hospital as a precaution. After an investigation lasting several months, OPP have charged a 19-year-old Middlesex Centre resident with careless driving causing death.
The accused is also facing charges related to having an open container of liquor in the vehicle and being under 19 years old and in possession of liquor, under the Liquor Licence and Control Act.
Police say a second collision happened at the scene when another vehicle struck the rear of the vehicle involved in the fatal crash.
A 72-year-old Appin resident has been charged with careless driving in connection with that collision.
Both accused were released from custody and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in London at a later date.
