As the Municipal Election date draws closer, one local organization is making it stance on one of the mayoral candidates well known.
Yesterday, Strathroy Firefighter Association sent out a social media post titled ‘Letter of Clarification’.
“Letter of Clarification
The Strathroy Firefighters Association wishes to formally clarify that it does not endorse mayoral candidate Derbyshire in the upcoming municipal election. Any suggestion or implication that the Association supports his candidacy does not reflect our position.
During his previous term in office, Councillor Derbyshire repeatedly voted against various items brought forward for consideration, characterizing them as wants rather than needs.
When it comes to firefighter health, safety, and cancer prevention, we believe this distinction is both concerning and unacceptable. In today’s world, the tools, equipment, and preventative measures available to reduce firefighters’ exposure to cancer-causing substances are not luxuries or optional enhancements. They are essential needs.
Firefighters dedicate themselves to protecting our community, often placing their own health, safety, and lives at risk to protect others. Those who make these sacrifices deserve the highest level of protection, support, and access to the resources necessary to reduce the risks associated with their service.
Protecting the health and safety of those who dedicate their lives to protecting others must be a top priority, not an afterthought.
The Strathroy Firefighters Association remains committed to advocating for the well-being of firefighters and ensuring that their health and safety receive the attention and resources they deserve. This clarification is intended to ensure that our position is accurately represented and that our Association’s name is not associated with a political endorsement it has not made.
Sincerely,
Strathroy Firefighters Association”
