A new Veterans Crosswalk is coming to Strathroy after municipal council approved funding to help bring the project to life ahead of Remembrance Day.
Strathroy-Caradoc council has approved a $3,000 contribution through its Progress Through Partnership Program to support the installation of a commemorative crosswalk on James Street.
Counillor Frank Kennes was happy to support the funding.
The project, spearheaded by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 116, carries an estimated price tag of $6,500. Local business ClearBags Strathroy has already committed $3,500, with the municipality’s contribution covering the remaining cost.
Deputy Mayor Mike McGuire was thankful this item got support.
The crosswalk is intended to honour Canadian veterans and serving military personnel while recognizing a significant milestone for the Legion. The organization is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2026.
Discussions surrounding the project began in July, when Legion representatives presented the proposal to municipal council.
Since then, municipal staff have worked with the Legion to review potential designs, identify a suitable location and determine whether the project could be completed. James Street was ultimately identified as the preferred location.
The municipality’s pavement marking contractor has also reviewed the proposed design and confirmed that the work is feasible.
With funding now approved, the project can move toward installation, although an exact installation date has not been announced.
