A vigil was held in London Tuesday evening for the victims in a vehicle attack Sunday night where a Muslim family was intentionally struck, killing four members and injuring a young boy.
Political leaders from all levels of government including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford attended the vigil at the London Muslim Mosque on Oxford Street West.
Police say the 20-year-old male driver, Nathaniel Veltman of London mounted the curb and struck the family intentionally, and then was arrested near Cherryhill Mall on Oxford Street.
Veltman has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder in the attack, and has ties to Strathroy, as company Gray Ridge Eggs confirmed he had been a part-time employee there for many years.
A march is also planned for later in the week being the London Multi-faith March to End Hatred is said to be taking place Friday at 7 p.m. beginning at the location of the collision.
In a statement, Gray Ridge said they were “shocked and saddened to learn late Monday afternoon that Nathaniel Veltman, part-time employee at our Strathroy plant, has been arrested and charged.” The statement went on to say “We join our community in expressing condemnation of this violent attack and offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family and the Muslim community.”
