The North Frontenac Telephone Company is set to launch a high-speed fiber internet service in Glencoe in August. Over a thousand homes and businesses will be serviced with high-speed fibre internet, and construction on the project is entering the final phase.
Sandy Nuttall, Vice President with NFTC said that the $6.5 million project with high-speed internet will run up to a gigabyte a second, which is the same speeds that people living in downtown Toronto get. Glencoe won’t be the only town receiving these services, places like Mount Brydges, Elgin County, Dutton, West Lorne and Rodney are also expecting to receive the same service.
According to MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex Monte McNaughton, this project is a part of the $4 billion investment Premier Doug Ford made to getting broadband into small towns and remote communities. McNaughton says this investment will greatly benefit the people and the town.
Southwest Middlesex Mayor Allan Mayhew says that this addition is great for the urban areas of the these communities, but next he wants to see it reach the rural areas and the farmers in the community as they are some of the people who need these services the most.
Reaching these farmers will be expensive and difficult to hit, Mayor Mayhew says, but reaching them needs to happen.
