In an OPP published video recently and on the first Christmas without Johannes (Ewan) Smolders, his family is pleading for the driver involved to come forward. According to OPP, on Thanksgiving Monday, 45-year-old Smolders was cycling on Calvert Drive, when a vehicle struck him from behind, and with the driver fleeing the scene. In the video, the family said “Your choices that night took away a really, really special man and your choices that night to leave him on the side of the road to die, that’s a very hard, hard thing for me to wrap my head around,” stated Sonia Freiter, Smolders’ widow.
OPP investigators say in the video, that they believe the suspect drove a 1998 to 2003 Dodge Durango, or a 1997 to 2004 Dodge Dakota, in addition Police say the vehicle suffered damage to its passenger headlight.
