A proposed apartment building out on Second Street by the Strathroy high schools was discussed at length at this week’s council. Council was asked to receive information regarding possibly approving a Zoning By-law amendment application to rezone the at 392 Second Street from ‘Future Development (FD) Zone’ to a site-specific ‘High Density Residential (R3-#) Zone’ to facilitate the build of a three story residential apartment building accommodating 48 units and with about 65 parking spots. There was plenty of discussion and comments against the potential build by residents currently living in that area ranging from high traffic, lighting, noise, road safety and resident demographics.
Future development in that area has already been approved by council being the North Meadows Secondary Plan which according to Senior Planner Tim Williams only addresses lands on one side of Second Street and where the process of approval had many opportunities for the public to participate.
The lands in question for the Secondary Plan are not owned by the municipality, there are different land owners involved. Councillor comments only came from Ward 1 representation including Frank Kennes who presented the reminder that this type of housing is needed for the community.
Council did approve to receive the report for information only this point, and the issue will now continue with more public meetings as part of the process moving forward.
