A pretty good addition to the resume last week for Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital as it became the first in Southwestern Ontario that will be able to use new technology that pinpoints and removes breast cancer with more accuracy. On Thursday SMGH announced it is adopting new technology from Molli Surgical Inc. Instead of using the wire to remove tumors, a magnet the size of a sesame seed is planted onto the tumor. The Molli Wand is then used to pinpoint exactly where the tumor is and it can be removed in as quick as 5 minutes. Chair of the board for Middlesex Hospital Alliance Catherine Osborne says it’s great that breast cancer surgery is now accessible in Strathroy-Caradoc.
Molli has been used on 4 patients so far. SMGH has a goal of using it for 40 patients per year. Strathroy-Caradoc Mayor Joanne Vanderheyden says this is a huge step for Breast Cancer patients.
It is a new device used in breast conserving surgery, says Chief Science & Clinical Officer and Co-founder Ananth Ravi.
This one of a kind machine is the first in Southwestern Ontario. The device was bought using a $290,000 grant from Ontario Health. Molli eliminates the use of wire localization. Wire Localization is when a wire resembling a fish hook is inserted into the breast tissue to find the tumor. It is a painful procedure. Once the wire is inserted, you then have to go about your normal life with a wire sticking out of your breast. It can get caught on something, move, or in some cases be fallout by accident. Molli eliminates that pain and anxiety.
