Plans are moving forward slowly but surely for the Women’s Rural Resource Centre to expand not only its services but their building itself. This week at Strathroy-Caradoc Council, they approved the receiving of information regarding the rezoning and plans for 145 and 155 Beech Street to permit the construction of a 4-storey building that will contain counseling, support, emergency shelter and transitional housing for women & families. The WRRC has been in the community for 30 years, servicing over 250 families a year, and according to Executive Director Corey Allison, the need is great hence the need for an expansion.
Allison says they have a plan in place to still accommodate their clients while their building would be under construction.
The subject lands are comprised of two properties containing the existing shelter and support uses. The development proposes to remove the two existing buildings on the lands and replace them with a single 4-storey building that will house 9 clients/families and some office space to support those staying on the property as well as outreach operations.
A Public Open House was held virtually on August 4th, 2022. The meeting was attended by the WRRC as well as a member of Council and staff, and no members of the public. The zoning by-law amendment application will receive final consideration by Strathroy-Caradoc Council at a future council meeting.
